A Big Clean Industry announcement!!
Attention all carpet cleaners. The Big Clean has an important announcement Carpet Cleaning is Dead!!
Well maybe that’s a little over dramatic but it is true that the carpet cleaning market is declining. There are two main factors influencing this downturn:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->1. <!--[endif]-->The dramatic rise in the number of carpet cleaning firms.
<!--[if !supportLists]-->2. <!--[endif]-->The aesthetic trend towards hardwood and laminate flooring.
With this in mind bigger, better, faster, more powerful carpet cleaning machines are little help. What you need instead is to find yourself a niche in the carpet cleaning industry that you can make your own and therefore ensure a continued or, better still, expanded supply of work.
The problem that many carpet cleaners will face in a financial downturn is that for a long time carpet cleaning has been a very stable, highly profitable industry. In other words carpet cleaners have got used to having it their way with plenty of work and good pay checks. This doesn’t sound like a problem but it can make some companies complacent and reluctant to change, so when the amount and value of the work decreases they are left unsure of how to overcome these new financial obstacles. Well, there are several ways to overcome this but perhaps the most secure, and in many ways the easiest is to find a niche.
Traditionally, finding a niche has involved aiming for a particular sector of the carpet cleaning industry such as providing a service that goes above and beyond the standards that every other company has. This allows you to target the upper end of the market and charge a little more for the service you offer and get the kind of clients who are affluent enough to have their carpets cleaned regularly. The other main alternative, although there are several ways to go, is to be the cheapest and try and work on the basis of doing a very high volume of jobs. (For more information on niche marketing give us a call and ask about our marketing material specifically aimed at carpet cleaners)
Now both of these methodologies have worked well in the past but even these mainstays are suffering in the current climate. The increase in the number of carpet cleaners means that prices are at record lows already and many clients at the wealthier end of the market are installing expensive hardwood floors.
However, panic not as The Big Clean has the solution!! Although hardwood and laminate floors are robbing carpet cleaners of the raw materials they need to run a viable and successful business they are giving something back – Area Rugs! If you think about all the rooms in a house that have hardwood floors almost all of them, with perhaps the exception of the kitchen and bathroom will have rugs. This means there may 10 -20 rugs in a house that are going to see just as much traffic as the carpets that they have replaced. Indeed, many will be in the most travelled parts of a room and have lights colours so they will need cleaning even more regularly than a carpet.
Traditionally many carpet cleaners have avoided rug cleaning as they believed there to be little profit in it and thought it could be very fussy work identifying the type of rug, the material, the tying method, the types of dye used etc. However, this is no longer the case. With the incredibly cheap prices that carpets are being cleaned for you can now charge more to clean a rug than a carpet. Furthermore, you can clean rugs back at base which means less time on site which will reduce your overheads. If you have a suitable premises you can even have clients bring rugs to you which means no more site visits to quote and no more travelling to jobs resulting in much lower fuel bills which is something we would all like! We are not suggesting that you quit carpet cleaning all together but what we do suggest is that you diversify; the more feathers in your cap the better, and if you establish yourself as the primo rug cleaner in your area then the money will flood in!
