How to clean stainless steel Looking after stainless steel products

Stainless steel is a high-quality material that lasts for a lifetime with the proper maintenance.  Following simple guidelines and routine gentle cleaning is all that is required to keep your stainless steel looking great.

DON’T allow harsh chemicals and chlorides such as bleach and antibacterial soaps to remain on the stainless steel
DO rinse and dry your stainless regularly.
DON’T use steel wool on stainless steel
DO use gentle
cleansers or those specifically made for stainless

Preventing Rust

· Stainless steel is resistant to many chemicals, but the use of chlorides creates an environment that can lead to pitting and discoloration.  Chlorides are found in many household cleaners, most notably bleach and antibacterial soaps.  If such chemicals are used, be careful to remove any residue and rinse and dry the stainless steel very thoroughly so the chemicals do not remain in contact with your steel.

· When scrubbing stains from your appliance, never use steel wool as it will leave behind bits of steel that will rust.

· Using rubber mats and leaving other objects on stainless for extended periods of time, especially in the presence of water or chemicals, can cause problems with your stainless steel.

· To prevent water stains and mineral deposits, dry the stainless steel with a towel after use.

Dealing with scratches

· Normal use of knives and other sharp objects may impart scratches to your stainless steel.  They will blend in with the finish over time.  When scrubbing, always go in the same direction as the finish to avoid creating more scratches.  Since stainless is a solid material, you can use light sandpaper or emery paper to fix scratches without compromising the quality of the material.  For everyday cleaning, use a soft scrubber such as Scotch-Brite.  Remember, don’t use steel wool for this purpose!

Cleaning and polishing your stainless steel

· Natural cleaners can be used with great success on your stainless steel.  Harsher cleaners that are specifically designed for stainless steel can be used for stubborn stains.  A recommended cleaner for this purpose is Bar Keeper’s Friend.  After cleaning, be sure to rinse and dry the stainless steel thoroughly.  Using a polishing agent is not necessary to maintain the quality of the stainless steel, but many are available if you would like to maintain a specific look in your home.
