Natural and Environmental Cleaning

Natural and Environmental Cleaning

For many people environmental awareness is becoming an increasingly important matter as reports and studies unveil the levels of pollution that western life in the 21st century is releasing in to the environment.   The greenhouse effect, polluted rivers and lakes, contaminated land and toxic groundwater are all the result of noxious chemicals we use in our everyday life.  However, what many people will find surprising is the number of these chemicals that the vast majority of us have in our home right now.  A large variety of household cleaning products contain some of the worst environmental polluters, listed below are just a select few to illustrate this point:

  • Air fresheners often contain formaldehyde a highly toxic, known carcinogen and phenol which in sufficient quantity, when in contact with skin, can cause it to swell, burn, peel, and break out in hives.
  • - Bleach is a strong corrosive and will irritate or burn the skin, eyes and the respiratory tract. It may cause pulmonary oedema or vomiting and coma if ingested.
  • - Dishwasher detergent products contain chlorine in a dry form that is highly concentrated and is rated the number 1 cause of child poisonings, according to poison control centres.
  • Mould and Mildew cleaners contain sodium hypochlorite a corrosive substance which irritates or burns skin and eyes, causes fluid in the lungs and can lead to coma or death and also formaldehyde a highly toxic, known carcinogen which may cause nausea, headaches, nosebleeds, dizziness, memory loss and shortness of breath.

The list of potentially harmful chemicals in cleaning products is endless, so how do environmentally aware individuals reconcile their desire for a clean home with the need to protect their family and the environment?  The answer is natural cleaning. There are many companies producing alternative natural cleaning products which are just as effective as the more noxious alternatives.  However, these products are often significantly more expensive and therefore put some people off.  What these people probably don’t realize is that they already have a natural cleaning kit at home consisting of everyday household items.  The key ingredients to make almost every conceivable type of cleaning product can be found in the list below:

Baking Soda, Vinegar, Water, Lemon Juice, Ammonia, Salt, Borax, Vegetable or Olive Oil, Club Soda, Isopropyl Alcohol, Toothpaste, Spray Bottles. Here are a few general pointers for kitchen cleaning with these substances:

  • - Stains on coffeepots can be removed by filling the pot half full with ice adding some vinegar and then several slices of lemon and leaving it to sit overnight, in the morning the pot will be completely clean, sanitized and deodorised.
  • - Food burns can be removed from pots by applying baking soda to the burn and then scrubbing with warm water.
  • - White vinegar on a sponge is extremely effective at cleaning steel sinks and helps to keep them shiny.
  • - Rust can be removed from steel surfaces by scrubbing with a mixture of lemon juice and cream of tartar which acts as an abrasive.
  • - Wooden floors can be cleaned using two brewed tea bags cooled to room temperature.
  • - Traditional toothpaste i.e. not the gel varieties can be used to clean silverware with an old toothbrush.
