There is a common misconception amongst many people that the only reason to clean your carpet is to enhance its look and to remove stains and odours. However, out of all the reasons to clean your carpet these are perhaps two of the least important factors.
Perhaps the most important reason is for your health, dirty unwashed carpets harbour all manner of nasties ranging from the organic to the chemical. Some of the organics in the carpet can include pollens, fungi, bacteria and many microscopic bugs such as dust mites, bed bugs and lice.
The chemicals found in your carpet can be literally limitless meaning if you come into contact with a chemical either inside or outside the house it can end up on your shoes and eventually in your carpet. This is not to say that carpets are any more unhealthy than other types of flooring in fact there has recently been a wealth of evidence suggesting that a well maintained clean carpet is just as healthy as any other surface.
The second really important reason to clean your carpets regularly is to help them last as long as possible. The money you spend on new carpets is one of the largest investments in your property so it obviously makes sense to look after them. But what a lot of people don’t know is that the dirt and sand like particles that end up in carpets is sharp and jagged so when you walk on a carpet it is constantly being cut. This means that over time the sawing action caused by your footstep actual shears bits off of the pile righ5t at the base next to the weave.
Therefore in my opinion these two factors are much more important reasons to regularly clean a carpet than just for its aesthetic value.
